Notes from the Founder
The beginning of a new year invites a particular kind of attention. By Roland-Philippe Kretzschmar
As the year turns, I wanted to say a simple thank you. Thank you for reading The Art Bystander. For spending time here. For paying attention in a world that rarely encourages it.
This project began quietly, without a fixed plan, and it has grown through reading, thinking, conversations, studio visits, exhibitions, fairs — and through the readers who’ve stayed with it over time.
I’ve never wanted this to be a feed or a promotional channel.
Just a place where it’s possible to slow down a little and try to understand what’s actually happening — in art, around art, and through it.
If you’ve been reading for a while, you already know the rhythm. Essays that take their time. Field notes that come from being present. Attempts to connect things rather than rush to conclusions.
About going deeper
Some readers choose to support this work more directly by investing in independent journalism. To celebrate the New Year, I’m offering 20% off the first year for new paid subscribers.
That gives full access to everything here:
All essays, interviews, and the archive
Field Reports from studios, fairs, and institutions
Guides for artists, gallerists, collectors and more
Market intelligence, trend analysis, and curatorial commentary
There’s no obligation. But if this work has meant something to you — or helped you see things a little more clearly — that’s the simplest way to support it and go a bit deeper.
Either way, thank you for being here.

PS — The offer is open for a short time during the New Year transition
